One common thing I’ve noticed that makes American writers so great is the use of comparisons and similitudes just like the quote posted above. 
Where the abuse of comparisons may be intended as a “run for cover” semantic refuge, the lack of them, in my opinion, makes a book far more boring and uncomprehensible, for we need comparisons to learn concepts and ideas.
If the use of comparisons is effective, then the book may be effective, otherwise, no matter how many have been used, one may be reading just a bunch of useless (but not worthless) words.
